Kythira is the epitome of untouched Ionian paradise. In fact, I debated writing a blog post about it, at risk of letting one of Greece’s best kept secrets out; but there are so many incredible things to do in Kythira. It is too special of a place to not share. Thanks to its off-the-beaten-path location, Kythira has managed to retain its authenticity, even as decades of tourism have transformed many other Greek islands.
If you’re looking to avoid crowds and relax in unspoiled Greek bliss, check out some of the best things to do in Kythira, Greece.
How to Get to Kythira
Kythira is nestled between mainland Greece and Crete, off the path of any cruise ships or charters. Its secluded location is what protects it from the mass-tourism that has plagued other islands, but can also make it harder to reach.
By Plane
Flying is the easiest and quickest way to get to Kythira from Athens. Flights leave daily or twice daily from Athens (ATH) to Kythira (KIT), and take approximately thirty minutes.
By Boat
Boats leave for Kythira from the port of Neapolis on the southernmost tip of Peloponnese, and take about an hour and a half. Boats do not run daily, but schedules and tickets can be booked through Triton Ferries. Alternatively, you can travel from Kissamos, Crete to Kythira in about four hours.
There is also a ferry from the port of Piraeus in Athens to Kythira, although the route takes approximately six and a half hours. Boats do not run daily, but schedules and tickets can be booked through SeaJets.
Getting Around Kythira
The various villages and beaches are quite spread out, so you need a car to get around Kythira. There is no public transportation and few taxis. Whether you travel to Kythira by boat or plane, you can rent a car through Drakakis Rent-a-Car or Panayotis Rent-a-Car and they will have it waiting upon arrival.
Where to Stay on Kythira
Part of the lure of Kythira can also result in fewer options for accommodations. Kythira still has a number of great hotels and rooms for rent, often more affordable than other Greek islands.
Best Things to Do in Kythira, Greece
Morning at Kaladi Beach
Kaladi Beach is the most iconic of Kythira’s beaches, and easily one of the best things to do in Kythira. It has earned a reputation as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Its beauty comes with a price, and requires a dramatic descent down 162 marble stairs. Once you’ve reached the bottom, Kaladi’s turquoise waters are iridescent against its pebbled floor. The shallow beach is made up of three portions; two inlets and a cave that you can walk between when the tide allows.
Parking is available at the taverna near the entrance to the beach. Leave 2 euro before beginning your descent down the stairs to Kaladi Beach. There are no vendors at the bottom, so bring ample water and a snack to avoid having to climb back up to the taverna.
If you’re traveling with kids, or would like to avoid the steep climb, Chalkos Beach is a stunning alternative. Unlike Kaladi, Chalkos has chairs and umbrellas for hire, as well as a beachfront taverna for snacks and beverages.
Lunch & Swim at Avlemonas
Avlemonas is a small fishing village that is quintessential island living. Stop along the rocky small harbor for lunch at one of the few tavernas. The swimming cove is idyllic for a post-lunch dip. Head down the stone stairs off the main street to dive into the natural pool.
Venetian Castle of Chora for Sunset
One of the best things to do in Kythira is to end a perfect day with a sunset from the best vantage point. Chora is a hilltop village that most closely resembles the whitewashed villages of more well-known Greek islands, but without the crowds. Park at the free municipal lot, as the small alleys are best explored on foot. Wander through the narrow alleyways, dotted with cafes and shops selling local jewelry and pottery. The pinnacle of Chora is its Venetian castle that dates back to the 13th century.
Dinner in Kapsali
Before dinner, hike up to the chapel of Agios Georgios for a view of the unique double bay of Kapsali. The southernmost village is larger than Avlemonas, with many shops, restaurants, and cafes to explore.
